Bay Area Mexicana: Bringing Traditional Mexican Flavors to Bloomington-Normal

Bay Area Mexicana is a must-visit restaurant located at Nightshop, 517 N. Main St. in downtown Bloomington, that offers a delicious and authentic taste of Mexico. The brainchild of co-owners Leroy Patrick and Jazmin Martinez, Bay Area Mexicana officially opened its doors on December 1st, 2021, and has been creating waves in Bloomington-Normal ever since.

Prior to venturing into the restaurant business, Leroy and Jazmin had a successful food truck in the Champaign area. Looking to expand their footprint, and having moved to the Twin Cities in 2022, they began searching for a restaurant space in the area. After a chance meeting with nightshop owner Chris Golwitzer, Bay Area Mexicana found a new home.

One of the things that sets Bay Area Mexicana apart from other Mexican restaurants is the focus on traditional Mexican food, rather than trying to push for a more "authentic" experience. As Jazmin explains, "I can share with people so they can try something different, because I know people are used to tacos, flour tortillas. I want people to enjoy what real Mexican food is and what we used to eat."

The menu at Bay Area Mexicana offers a wide range of traditional Mexican breakfast items such as tres leches French toast and huevos con chorizo, as well as birria dishes like quesabirrias, birria ramen, and birria burrito. For those who prefer vegetarian options, the restaurant has a vegan and vegetarian menu, as well as different "aguas frescas" flavors each week.

If you're in the mood for a traditional Mexican meal, Bay Area Mexicana is a must-try restaurant. Open during the day and early afternoon four days a week, this restaurant can also be visited on Friday and Saturday nights, and at events and businesses in the area. Check out their upcoming schedule on their Facebook page or Instagram.
