Healthy South Indian Breakfast Recipes

South Indian cuisine is known for its variety of healthy breakfast options. Here are some traditional dishes that are not only delicious but also provide essential nutrients to kickstart your day.

Upma

A thick consistency of vegetables and grains like rice, wheat, rava or others with some seasoning make upma a healthy breakfast option. The nutrients in upma include proteins, carbs, minerals, iron and zinc among others.

Puttu

Puttu is a traditional South Indian dish made from rice flour and grated coconut. It is served with a chickpea curry called kadala curry. It is a great source of carbs that keep your energy levels high. A noodle version of the puttu, idiyappam is also made with rice flour. It is served with grated coconut, stew, sugar or even bananas.

Appam

Appam is a thin pancake made out of fermented rice batter and coconut. It can be served with coconut chutney, egg curry, kadala curry, sambar or any gravy. It is moderate in calories. These warm and spongy pancakes are loved by many.

Uttapam

Uttapams can be topped with green chillies, tomatoes, onions and sambar. They provide carbs and proteins.

Pongal

Pongal is a rice and lentil porridge that is served with black pepper, cumin and ginger and is often served with sambar and chutney.

Rava Pongal

Rava pongal is a good alternative to rice. This is a deep-fried doughnut-shaped dish that is made with urad dal and goes best with sambar and coconut chutney. If made at home, you can do away with trans-fat and reduce the saturated fat.

Akki Roti

Akki Roti is a flatbread that is made with rice flour, spices, herbs and vegetables. It is mainly served with stew and curry. It is high in carbs and minerals such as sodium and potassium.

Idli Upma

This is made from the leftover batter of idlis and dosas. A special mould is needed to make this dish and it is also served with sambar, chutneys, and pickles. It is a good source of protein and fibre.

Medu Vada Curry

As the name suggests, this dish is curry made with vadas. As opposed to the other dishes in the list this is heavy and filling. It is best served with chutney.

Recipe for Upma

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of semolina (rava)
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 green chilli, chopped
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 sprig of curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp oil or ghee
  • Salt to taste

Directions

  1. Heat oil or ghee in a pan and add mustard seeds. When they start to crackle, add cumin seeds, asafoetida and curry leaves.
  2. Add chopped onions, green chilli and grated ginger. Saute until onions turn translucent.
  3. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  4. Meanwhile, roast semolina in a dry pan until it turns light brown.
  5. Add roasted semolina to the pan and mix well. Add 2 cups of water and salt to taste.
  6. Cover and cook on low flame until water is absorbed and upma is cooked through.
  7. Serve hot with chutney or pickle.
