Poha: The Popular and Easy-to-Make Breakfast Dish

Poha, also known as flattened rice, is a popular staple breakfast dish in many Indian homes. It is easy-to-make and highly customizable as per personal preference, making it a healthy breakfast option that is loved by many.


  • 1 cup Poha (flattened rice)
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 6-7 Curry leaves
  • 2 Green chillies, chopped
  • 1 Onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup Peas
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 Potato, boiled and diced
  • Lime juice to taste
  • Freshly grated Coconut or Pomegranate pearls (optional)
  • Roasted peanuts (optional)
  • Sev or Dahi for serving


  1. Rinse the Poha under running water and drain the excess water. Keep it aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add Mustard seeds, Cumin seeds, and Curry leaves. Let them splutter.
  3. Add chopped Green chillies and Onion, and saute till Onion turns translucent.
  4. Add Peas and Turmeric powder. Mix well and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Add drained Poha, diced boiled Potato, and Salt. Mix well.
  6. Cover and cook for 3-4 minutes on low flame.
  7. Add Lime juice, grated Coconut or Pomegranate pearls, Roasted peanuts (if using), and mix well.
  8. Serve hot with Sev or Dahi on top.
